Sample Press Releases for Activism Campaigns
As part of my guide on how to create your own environmental activism campaign I have included some press releases here. They are exactly the same as I had sent out except that I have removed my email address and phone number. At the bottom I have also included emails that I sent as an example. I hope these serve you in your activism campaigns!
This is my press release from Off the Grid Across America from in April 2013. This was my first ever press release and my first ever environmental activism campaign. So this was created before I’d ever had the media report on anything I’d done.
Adventurer Rob Greenfield to cycle 4,500 miles across America for sustainability
By Rob Greenfield
April 19, 2013
Cycling 4,500 miles across the USA, that’s the easy part. So what’s the hard part? How about doing it completely off the grid? For three months, adventurer Rob Greenfield will be showing and inspiring Americans how to live sustainably and decrease their environmental impact. Sponsored by Dr. Bronner’s, Goal Zero, Bamboosero, Drips Water and Kala Brand Music, he will be using electricity generated by portable alternative energy devices, creating near zero trash, using water from natural sources, eating locally produced organic and unpackaged foods, composting all food waste and shopping at businesses that are committed to creating a healthy planet.
The adventure begins at the San Francisco Earth Day Celebration on April 20th and will take Rob through 19 states. Traveling mostly on ‘blue highways’, he will also be spending time in cities including Salt Lake City, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York, Providence and Boston. The journey is scheduled to end on August 1st at the 1% for the Planet Headquarters in Waitsfield, Vermont. During the three month trip Rob will be raising $10,000 for 1% for the Planet non-profits, including Guitars in the Classroom, Below the Surface, Worldbike, ioby, Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter, Reuse Alliance, Growing Power, Solar Sister, and Community Cycles, as well as finding 20 new businesses to join the 1% for the Planet movement. 1% for the Planet is a growing global movement of over 1,000 companies that donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations worldwide.
Along the way, Rob will be hosting zero waste events and bicycle rides, visiting environmental causes and businesses that practice corporate social responsibility, promoting sustainable products, working with community gardens, practicing the ukulele, and hosting do good giveaways via Facebook. The journey will be documented by professional cameraman, Brent Martin, and can be followed online at www.GreenfieldAdventures.org and www.facebook.com/GreenfieldAdventures.

When: October 14th – October 30th
Where: Berkeley, CA to San Diego, CA
Rob Greenfield, a resident of San Diego who recently completed a cross country journey on his bamboo bicycle in the name of sustainability is at it again. “The Do Good Tour” will be a two week cycling journey, with Rob beginning in Berkeley on October 14th, and ending in San Diego on the 30th. This would be a great feel good story for your viewers as Rob will be conducting “Random acts of goodness” all along the California coast, and inspiring others to do good too! “Do Good” activities will include picking up trash, volunteering with area non-profits, planting wild flowers and vegetables, and donating food to those in need.
Along the way Rob will also be hosting seven Stamp Stampede parties. The Stamp Stampede, a project of People Power Initiatives run by Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, has the ultimate goal of stopping corporations from buying out politicians. During these parties, participants will legally stamp messages on our nation’s currency to #getmoneyout of politics. Dumpster Diving for a Cause
Rob Greenfield, a nationally renowned environmental activist, is biking on his bamboo bike from San Diego to NYC inspiring American’s to live happy, healthy, and free. His current campaign on the tour is cycling from his homeland of Wisconsin to New York City fueled 100% by food found in dumpsters to raise awareness about food waste and encourage grocery stores to donate food to non-profits to feed hungry American’s rather than put it in the dumpster. Americans throw away $165 Billion worth of food per year while 1 in 7 of its citizens are still food insecure. Rob also donated the last $421 he had on him to a non-profit and is traveling moneyless.
In stops along the way, he’s inviting American’s to dumpster dive and dine with him, as well as creating huge displays of perfectly good food from dumpsters to help America realize that this waste isn’t trash – it’s perfectly healthy food!
Besides daily dumpster diving to raise awareness in Chicago Rob will be creating a huge display of dumpster food at Lincoln Park this Tuesday. An example of this visual he created in Madison can be seen on his website at This Food is From Where?!

On camera interviews and impressive dumpster food displays will be available. Dumpster diving can be arranged. Contact Rob directly at [email protected] or 555-555-5555. More information about this tour can be found at his blog or Rob’s Facebook.

Fiascos in Madison, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, DC, and Lancaster have been a huge success and prior to arriving in NYC he’ll also be hosting fiascos in Philadelphia. He arrives in NYC from his cross-country trek on September 26th and is hosting his final food waste fiasco of the tour on September 30th 5:00-8:00 PM at Union Square.
He’s inviting American’s to dumpster dive and demonstrate with him and urge grocery stores to stop dumping and start donating! #DonateNotDump

Here is a sample email from September 23rd 2014 on my second bike ride across America.
I am an adventurer and activist on a mission to inspire American’s to live happy, healthy, and free. I’m currently cycling across America eating only food I find in dumpsters to raise awareness about food waste (We throw away $165 billion worth of food per year while 1 in 7 Americans is hungry).
I’ll be ending my #DonateNotDump tour in New York, and will be there from September 26th – September 30th (eating out of dumpsters of course). I will be making a huge display of perfectly good food found in New York City grocery store dumpsters on September 30th at Union Square from 5:00-8:00 PM, hosting my final Food Waste Fiasco . It will be a very eye opening visual of food waste and I can’t think of a better organization than CBS This Morning to cover it!
I would be happy to create a large display of food found in New York city dumpster just for CBS This Morning so that your viewers will really be interested. You can find out more details at the Facebook Event. Otherwise I can come in studio or I invite you to the dumpsters with me for a story!
To get a feel for what I’m doing, check out my latest stories with Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, and newspapers such as USA Today at #DonateNotDump Media
I hope to do a story with you!
Much health and happiness to you!
