How High School Student, Ella Diamond, Took Action to Reduce Food Waste in Her Community

Guest blog by Ella Diamond of Food Waste 4 Thought

Have you ever tossed out a mushy, old head of lettuce, thinking that it’ll break down
within a few days or a week? It’s only lettuce, you think to yourself. It’s natural, so it must not
take too long to decompose. Shockingly, landfill excavations have found instances of it taking 25 entire years for a head of lettuce to decompose! When food gets dumped in landfills, it tries to break down, but it doesn’t have the available oxygen, causing it not only to remain intact, but also to release methane gas
into the atmosphere. This greenhouse gas, more potent than carbon dioxide, makes food
waste a main contributor to climate change as it accounts for the largest source of municipal
waste in landfills. Meanwhile, a staggering one third of food produced worldwide is wasted when this
food could be feeding all of the world’s food insecure individuals.

I’m not running for office. I don’t work for the government. But I am your public servant.

I am not running for office. I don’t work for the government. But I do consider myself a public servant. I have designed my life to be of service to the people of my nation and the people of the world. As an American citizen, I am dedicated to using my life to improve the lives of those around me. I’ve watched our “public servants” over the last couple of decades, and I’ve learned a lot. From some, I have learned who I want to be. From others, I have learned who I don’t want to be.

I have put countless hours of thought into how I can mold myself to be of best service to my country and the world. And I have put far more hours into solid action, becoming the human I want to be, and leading by a positive example to truly be of service.

I feel today, just before midterm elections 2018, is a timely day to share my personal commitments as a public servant to my nation and the world.

Solutions Fund Orlando Micro-Grant Program

Rob Greenfield and IDEAS for Us have partnered to launch a micro-grant program to incubate new projects that will have a positive impact in the Orlando, Florida community both environmentally and socially. We are launching the program by offering three micro-grants of $1,000 this spring. Throughout the upcoming years more grants will be offered.

We simply want to make our community a happier, healthier and more sustainable place. We think that empowering our neighbors who have great ideas, but lack the funds to implement them, is one of the greatest ways that we can do this. With dedication and a little ingenuity we know that $1,000 can go a long way in launching a new initiative that can ultimately grow into something very impactful. Along with the micro-grant, the project will also receive advice from Rob Greenfield as well as promotion through social media through a network of over 10 million people.

My Net Worth is…

Many of you may be wondering what my financial situation is. I get asked about my relationship with money a lot, which makes sense since most of us feel that we need enough money to be able to really pursue our passions. I believe that I am living proof that that is just not true.

Sustainable Living Video Series with Rob Greenfield

After 3 years in the making, I’m so excited to finally bring to you my Sustainable Living Series. The series documents my off the grid bike ride across the USA on a bamboo bicycle where I practiced sustainable living to the extreme. In 4,700 miles of cycling, I used just 160 gallons of water, burned less than one gallon of gas, never turned on a light switch and created only 2 pounds of trash. That is 80x less water, 200x less trash, 600x less fossil fuels, and 1,000 times less electricity than the average American! Plus I ate nearly 300 pounds of food from grocery store dumpsters to prove just how much perfectly good food we’re wasting in the USA.

The things I did were extreme but in this series you’ll learn how your daily actions affect the world around you both near and far. The episodes are food, waste, water, transportation, and energy and each episode informs you in an inspirational and fun way. By the end of the series, you will know the basics behind sustainable living and what you can do to live more sustainably without going nearly to the extremes that I did on my journey. Each episode ends with what you can do to be the change you wish to see.
